Profile
“In him was life, and that life was the light of men” John 1:4 Our church name comes from this verse about Jesus. We have life, physically and spiritually because of him. As we have a relationship with him he not only gives us life but light. A light that gives direction, wisdom, holiness, and peace. As we do life with Jesus he directs our steps. Just like this verse we as a church want to be all about Jesus and because of that we are named Light and Life. We want to be a place that gives life and light to all who come, see, or hear of what God is doing in this place. Light and Life Church. A place of worship that is all about loving Jesus and loving people.
History
Established in 2006.
Ribbon-cutting for the new church (where it is presently) took place on September 18, 1965. The Whittier Free Methodist Church closed its doors to merge with the Downey church in 1966. Over the next thirty years the church continued to have growing and declining times. The church had about nine different pastors over those years and hit an all-time low in 2003 with about 60 attendees. The church continued to pray while the conference thought about selling the property. But God’s timing is perfect. In 2006, with help from a sister church, the church got a new pastor and 60 new brothers and sisters that were ready to help the church turn around. With God’s help, new vision and energy, the church began to grow. The church is still growing today, and has more than 500 people who now call Light & Life Church Downey their home church.
