History
Established in 1850.
On May 19, 1850, nine men and women, knelt in a homemade tent of blue jeans, and the First Baptist Church of San Jose was born. This was the first church in the newly incorporated city of San Jose. After fires in 1853 and 1882, followed by the 1906 earthquake, the faithful members rebuilt the church. Successive decades saw continued faith and growth, even during the early sixties when First Baptist’s 87-year old buildings were condemned by the downtown San Jose Redevelopment Agency. In 1963, First Baptist bought the 33-acre Ironwood Golf Course three and one-half miles to the south. In 1970 the church family moved to its new home, the “Church on the Hill.” One year later, the Achiever Christian Preschool began. We have remained on the Hill until the present time, continuing to be a landmark church in our Valley.
